Hope this is not too late but happy winter solstice to everyone out there. I found out from a friend who used to live in China that they don't have the custom of eating glutinous rice ball during this day. I still remember when I was young, my grandmother used to tell me that for each of the rice ball that I eat, it signifies that I am one more year older. That means if I eat 10 rice balls, I will be older by another 10 years. But I will be so gullible to believe in it because when I was a kid, I always can't wait to grow up older and do things adult do (but now I think I want the clock to turnback already, can I vomit out the rice balls?).
Anyway, I can't think of another better way to celebrate this festival than eating glutinous rice balls. Even on normal days, I always crave for glutinous rice balls dessert. Whenever I come back to my hometown, I make sure I try to have at least a bowl of the dessert with my family. To me, this is also a good time to gather with my family and bring ties closer to each other. Sometimes there may not be a lot of conversation taking place but spending some time with my family is something that I really value.
I know there are a variety of glutinous rice balls some are sweet, while some are savoury. My favourite of all is the type with crushed peanuts sugar filling served in a bowl of steamy, hot and sweet ginger broth. There are other flavours like black sesame and red beans but to me, nothing beats the good ol' version. Do you also have a favourite version too?
