a secret brunch hideout

Away from the hustle and bustle of the city's beat. This little tuck shop is located within a high end housing area. When I first came across this shop, I was intrigued by the name Frisky Goat and wondered what food is served behind the blue door. I finally made the move to drop in on a weekend, this place is filled with people and full of activities even though on the outside the street seems quiet and deserted.

I finally succeeded to dine at this place on my 2nd visit. The empty seats outside the cafe is a good indication to me that I am in luck that day. Gleefully, I pushed open the door to be greeted by the friendly staff with a smile and welcomed by the smell of pastries that wafted through the air. There is music playing in the background but drowned by the echoes of voices, humming from the espresso machine and the clinking of knives against the ceramic plates.

Without thinking much, I chose a table at the end of the room so that I can be away from all the physical activities going on in the middle of the room. Preferring to witness the buzz that is going on from the comfort of my little quiet corner. I like the idea that they have a display counter showcasing all the pastries available for the day, albeit rather limited. It was a pleasant visit and hope to return to this place again for their waffle.

A good friend that I've known for many years since high school and now we are also colleague. It's her birthday recently and we had a nice scrumptious lunch at Ichiriki @ Gardens. I had so much until I had a hard time getting back to work after that.

But good old friends are hard to come by as we grew older. Should appreciate friends that we can still maintain from younger days.

It's always comforting to know that in the midst of all the stresses from work and life, there is someone busy googling on the Internet, making an effort to reward you by bringing you to the finest thing possible. For that, I really want to thank my other half for bringing me to one of the finest restaurants in Bali - Sardine.

Behind the close wall on this bustling Jalan Petitenget is a fine dining restaurant that housed under sprawling bamboo structure. This place dishes out delicious fine foods with a menu that change on a daily basis depending on their catch of the day. Vegetables are harvested from their own organic farm – sounds pretty healthy to me, ain’t it?

One of the thing that catches my eyes the moment I arrived is this giant painting on the wall of a Balinese Legong’s eyes. As though carefully watching their customers making sure that all of them are well taken care of. Balinese touches can be easily seen everywhere in this place with effort being made to conserve the greens and the environment. The wooden chairs, for example, are actually recycled.

On top of the top-notch food that you will be serving, be prepared to be vowed by their stunning private glistening paddy field while you savour on your delicacies. It’s a view of lush greenery paddy field waiting to be harvested, depending on the season that you’re there, that gives nothing more than just serenity and a peace in mind. It’s hard not to fall in love with Bali when you have places like this.

The couple behind this brainchild is a husband and wife team. The husband hails from France that used to live on the Caribbean and he comes from the 4th generation of Burgundys chef while the wife is a Slovenian artist and interior designer. During our meal, the wife was very friendly to come to our table and chat with us, making sure that all our needs are met.

For our appetizer, we ordered Yellowfin Tuna Carpaccio and Opaka paka & Sea Bream Sashimi. Then we ordered Pan Seared Diver Scallops and Panache of Yellowfin Tuna, Rouget and Jumbo Prawn as our main. The food on overall was lovely and you’re really getting a top notch service for the money that you’re paying there.

I always have a love for high tea, I feel I'm quite a sucker of all things pretty and dainty. Poor bf, he has to make up for my lack of girlfriends and take up the role as one, most of the times. Imagine a big man drinking from a tea cup, you may just think he is getting into the role of playing "masak masak" with a little girl. It's funny, how my other half commented on me that I'm the only person where he needs to prepare clothing that is fit enough to meet the Queen even though we're on a beach holiday. LOL!!!

It's true and I admit I have special request sometimes and some of these requests may appear to be odd at times. So, one of the things I requested to do on my Bali holiday is to have English high tea at Biku. Yes you read me correct, of all places right?

My holiday in Bali begins with an awesome high tea spread at Biku and trust me, you will not go wrong with this place for high-tea. They do serve amazing food here.

Some quick snapshots of Biku's surroundings. I really like the effect of high ceiling and exposed beam in this colonial-style building.

I ordered a set of traditional english hi-tea set, this portion in the picture is meant for one person but I feel it's enough for sharing if you plan to try out more variety on their menu. For my tea, I went for white tea, something simple and not overpowering to the taste bud.

This place serves one of the best scones. Most scones I had usually have a more dense texture but the scone here is slightly more fluffy, almost with a cake like texture. The weight of the scone is also lighter, so it's really easy to enjoy it without feeling full so soon. Usually I prefer to have my scone to go with soft butter or clotted cream but that day I decided to try it with jam and their jam is heavenly. I am glad I give the jam a try as I'm really not a fruit jam person.

How do you like your scones to be served?

On top of all the dainty food, they also serve proper main meals. We ordered Indonesian fried rice on a separate visit for our lunch. It's definitely not the best stuff from their menu but it's still worth ordering it and if you're a someone that likes spicy food, like me, you will definitely love the spicy chilli that come together and it really goes well with the rice. It's also a good idea to have your cold drink ready before you venture on the chilli with your taste bud.

If you're feeling more adventurous why not get yourself a tarot card reading while there? It's a paid service, each reading last about 15 minutes and if you're feeling rich you can pay more for a detailed reading. At the end of the service, the lady will ask you to insert money into her tarot card box. It's not clear how much each reading cost and I think it's up to you to decide but I paid USD10 just for the fun of it.

Things to know:
- Books and souvenirs are available for sale there.
- Best to make reservations before going especially during peak hour.
- The scones here is a must try.
- You really don't need to dress like you're going to meet the Queen here, casual attire is advisable :-p

Wu Fen Pu (五分埔) & Raohe Night Market (饒河街觀光夜市)

While I prepare myself for my family trip, I'll be making notes on the places where I plan to go here. Feel free to share or use the information here but at your own risk, I do not take responsibility for the accuracy of the information here and if you do spot any inaccuracy, please do let me know. ^_^

p/s: I'm back but still updating this post based on what I experienced while I was there.

Some things to know:
- The nearest night market is Raohe St. Night Market (饒河街觀光夜市). So it makes sense to spend about a day to visit both places in a day.
- The main reason people are here is because this place is fame for its cheap clothing. But I would say if you're a tourist here, you're most likely pay more than the local and if you're only buying 1 or 2 piece from the shop, you're still paying the regular price outside. I suppose after all the hype about this place selling cheap clothing the glory days are now over people.
- Make sure you check your product especially those NTD100 clothes. I realised a lot of the things I bought, the threads will start to give way after the first wash.
- If you're there really to do serious shopping, try to go to this place early because after the sun is down, you will have a hard time maneuvering around this area and this place is really huge.

Food to try:
- Pepper buns (福州世祖胡椒饼)

- Medicinal braised pork ribs and lamb (金林三兄弟)

Directions:

Take the MRT to Houshanpi [後山埤] Station (Nangang line i.e. blue line).
At the Houshanpi station, take Exit 4, as you get off the escalator, take a 180 degrees turn, turn right and walk along Youngji Street for about 5-10 minutes.
Lookout for the roadsigns that says "Wu Fen Pu" as seen above, and turn right into the Wu Fen Pu! A good landmark would be to look out for the red YMCA building on the left. The entrance to Wu Fen Pu is directly opposite YMCA.

Business hour: Most shops open at around noon and close after mid-night d. On Sundays, shops may close earlier around 9:00p.m. e. Mondays are said to be strictly for wholesalers only, so you might not be served as well on other days.

Dining out: Dabbsy's Cafe

One of my favourite hangout when I got tired of working from the 4 walls of my room is Dabbsy's Cafe @ Valencia, Sungai Buloh. It doesn't boast an impressive environment but a cosy and quiet cafe to get some work done. Sometimes I try to update myself with some overseas reading material from their magazine rack, probably left behind by their customers, they have a wide range of magazines from auto to high society. On weekends you can also enjoy the al fresco dining experience under the huge shady trees and umbrella to relax for the rest of your weekends.

They serve perhaps the best mash potatoes here. I always prefer mash potatoes with a bit of milky taste but here they put a huge dollop of butter on your mash giving it a really creamy and smooth texture.

So far I have brought 2 girlfriends here on 2 different occasions and they love the food here too. One of them especially love the pumpkin soup, saying that the soup is thick and yummy. I'm glad to have found this little gem in the area where I live without driving too far out.

The downside of this place is the lack of a better service. One of their waitresses is a bit clumsy and slow with orders, at times I feel like she is trying to avoid doing extra work especially when the boss is not around.

I remember that not too long ago it was also the Rugby World Cup and the cafe will turn into a little pub with a lot of expats that live in this area crowding together to cheer for their team over beers and finger foods. On every first Tuesday of the month, a British expat ladies club will hold a gathering for chit chatting among members.

Unfortunately I'm not sure if outsider is able to come in this place because Valencia is a gated living environment and it's a residents only place.

Jarrod & Rawlins: Hearty breakfast

Off we went to Jarrod and Rawlins to enjoy a big breakfast under the summer heat at 4pm. Most people are already on their way making dinner but it's only the start of the day for us.

La Cigale: Auckland's French-styled Farmers' Market

One of things I did when I was there was to visit the La Cigale, it's the French Market in Auckland. To be here, you need to rise early to catch the freshest ingredients from the market. I had a field day looking at the varieties and completely immerse myself into the noisy environment. It's definitely worth a visit!

Who can miss this early shot of espresso? Here I had one of the most wonderful and delicious mochaccino!

There is a building where you can go in and warm yourself if you find outside to be too chilly (and I did just that!)

Bought some herbs for the Queen in my house, so that my family can also have a taste of Auckland that I brought back for them. Ain't that a clever idea?

A whole lot of activities that is actually going on revolves around this stall. Of course my photo here didn't quite justify. Actually on the right, there is a loooooooonnnnnngggggg queue of people queueing to buy coffee and on the right is another queue for paying up food. It's a buzzing stall!

A wide variety of cheese to choose and there is also a wide selection of wines on the other side of the market that you can choose from to go with the cheeses.

Ah... finally ronnie's favourite, the ham slicer... Don't ask me why... ^_^

After visiting the marketplace, on the other side of the market you can actually stroll through some of the stores. I remember there is a store that sells goods which they bring in all the way from France. Then there is also a garage that sells furnitures and add ons. Just allow yourself to be amused with all the things that you discover here.

Always remember when you go on holiday, go with an open heart and open mind, don't let things at home to bog down your feelings. This way, you will definitely be able to enjoy every moment of your life. Adios.

freeze the time, capture the moment

So happy, in fact I am more than just happy. I feel more alive than I ever was since relocating back here. Seeing how I'm populating my calendar with gathering events with my friends, I'm starting to feel a sense of relief and I hope all this doesn't stop but will continue on for as long as I want. I need my family and bf to remind me that I'm needed, friends to remind me that I'm alive.

Brotzeit, Mid Valley - I was here for a gathering recently, friend came back from NZ for holiday. Speaking of NZ, I'm going there again next month.

My former church buddy, it's been a long time since we last met. It was good to see her again after so long.

One is a friend from pre-school day, the other is my friend from high school. Miss those days in school, minus the exam fever.

Hope to be able to see you soon (perhaps in NZ?)

The night turns out to be a night filled with spooked stories and clearly my friend here is having a good time sharing his stories with us.

Delicious food makes me happy

I can go on watching the world goes by through this veil of rain droplets as I plunge into my own ocean of thoughts. Somehow seeing the droplets forming together into bigger drop fascinates me.

Oh my word, I just can't get enough of this wedge. I simply can't describe to you how comfortable it is even though it has heels. Just perfect for this impromptu road trip hunting for food on the streets.

rejuvenating weekend

Life is not always a bed of roses but I constantly remind myself to appreciate the finer things in life. Sometimes I will get too caught up with my own situations that I always forget how lucky I am, good thing I have a very understanding partner to remind me.

Once awhile we should allow ourselves to enjoy some finer moments, to do something we love, to do something we truly enjoy. One should never feel bad about indulging into something you like, especially if you earn it. Our life is too short to be fussing over the world everyday.
